• ‘Who Cares?’ Plenty of people!

SCMDC’s 5th Annual Marine Science Forum was yet another success. Although attendance numbers were slightly down on last year, enthusiasm for this significant event was definitely at a high.  With the theme of ‘Who Cares?’ the Forum focuses on global research that had local outcomes and the attendees were overwhelmingly positive about their experience.

Topics covered tsunami warning systems, a new oyster industry information portal, underwater forests, research on humpback whale feeding off the Far South Coast, overgrazing of kelp beds, and the effects of ocean acidification with presenters from The Australian National University, University of Tasmania, University of New South Wales, Geoscience Australia, University of Queensland and University of Wollongong.

SCMDC is now firmly on the radar of these respected tertiary institutions, with the partnerships becoming stronger all the time.  This all augers well for the future expansion of the research arm of the Centre.

All in all a great weekend of locally relevant marine science.

Many thanks to our speakers who are pictured on the right: Dr Steve Eggins (ANU), Dr Jane Sexton (Geoscience Australia), Dr Eqequiel (Ziggy) Marzinelli (UNSW), SCMDC’s Sheree Epe, Kate Holland (PhD Candidate, ANU), Dr Pia Winberg (UOW), Dr Scott Ling (UTAS),  [absent] Kylie Owen (PhD Candidate, UQ)

Thanks also to:  John Aveyard (SCMDC Associate Member Chair and Emcee), Sheree Epe (SCMDC Marine Scientist, Forum Chair), Shaun Bray (EMHS Technician), Dave Boulton and all the staff at EMHS for helping with logistics and security, Fay Davidson and Jan Aveyard (for helping with morning tea), SCMDC staff members Jillian Riethmuller (Marine Education Officer) and Kerryn Wood (Operations Assistant), Peter & Eva Horne (for taking care of transport for some of our speakers), the Nimmos at Eagle Heights of Eden. Apologies if we have forgotten anyone!
