• Ashley Burkett and ‘Alvin’ the deep sea submersible

Well the year started off busy and the pace is not likely to stop in the short term with a number of events lined up for our supporters up and down the coast.

At 5:30pm on Friday 31st May, we will be hosting a young PhD student from Indiana State University in the US – Ashley Burkett – for a presentation which is sure to draw a crowd.  Some will remember Ashley’s supervisor Professor Tony Rathburn who entertained a huge crowd several years ago with his tales of deep sea research.  Tony suggested that Ashley might be keen to give us an update whilst in Australia so we are thrilled to be hosting her.

Ashley is one of the lucky few who has experienced a deep deep sea dive in the human occupied vehicle known as ‘Alvin’ (http://www.whoi.edu/alvin/).  Alvin is capable of taking researchers as deep as 4500 metres – a daunting prospect for many!

You can read more about Ashley’s amazing research experiences here but why not come along and hear her first hand at the Discovery Centre.  Entry will be FREE for Associate Members, $5 for non-members.
