Published

The Sapphire Coast is the far south coast of New South Wales, the stretch of shoreline between Bermagui and the Victorian border. It is a coast of deep-blue water, quiet beaches, oyster-growing estuaries, forested headlands and small towns, and it is one of the best places in Australia to watch whales from shore. It is far enough from Sydney and Melbourne that it never feels crowded for long, and close enough to Canberra for a long weekend.

This hub brings together our planning advice. We do not sell tours or publish prices. Check current details with operators, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Sapphire Coast visitor centres before you travel.

Where the Sapphire Coast starts and finishes

Things to do on the Sapphire Coast

  • Walk the Merimbula boardwalk around the lake and estuary, watching for rays and birds. See things to do in Merimbula.
  • Watch whales from headlands, from the wharf in Eden or on a cruise, especially in spring. Our whale watching page explains the season.
  • Learn the story of Eden's killer whales, who hunted alongside local whalers in Twofold Bay. Read the killer whales of Eden.
  • Walk the Light to Light Walk in Beowa National Park, a 32-kilometre coastal hike from Boyds Tower to Green Cape Lighthouse. See our Light to Light Walk guide.
  • Eat local oysters from the Pambula, Merimbula and Wonboyn estuaries.
  • Swim at the Blue Pool in Bermagui, a rock pool built into the cliffs.

How many days to allow

  • 2 to 3 days: Merimbula and Eden, with a whale cruise in season or a walk in Beowa National Park.
  • 4 to 5 days: add Tathra and Bermagui, or a hinterland day around Bega and Candelo.
  • A week: time for the Light to Light Walk, more beaches and an unhurried pace.

Our three-day Sapphire Coast itinerary sets out a practical first visit.

When to go

  • Summer is the main holiday season, with the warmest water and busiest towns.
  • Autumn brings settled weather, fewer crowds and good conditions for walking.
  • Winter is cool and quiet, with the northern whale migration passing offshore.
  • Spring is whale season at its best, as humpbacks return south and often rest in Twofold Bay.

See when to go for more detail.

Getting here

The Sapphire Coast is roughly six to six and a half hours' drive from Sydney and Melbourne, and about three hours from Canberra. Merimbula has a regional airport; check current routes and airlines before you book. A car is the easiest way to explore once you arrive. See getting there.

Travelling with children

Calm estuaries, rock pools, wildlife and easy walks make the Sapphire Coast an excellent family destination. Read our guide to the Sapphire Coast with kids, and the rocky-shore etiquette note before exploring the rock platforms.

Safety and respect

  • Swim at patrolled beaches between the flags where available. Many beaches are unpatrolled, and rips are common.
  • Take care on rock platforms, which can be hit by unexpected waves.
  • Check NPWS alerts before visiting national parks, especially in fire season.
  • The region is the Country of the Yuin people. Respect cultural sites and signs.
