Sapphire Coast itinerary: three days from Merimbula to Eden and Tathra
A practical three-day Sapphire Coast itinerary based in Merimbula: Merimbula and Pambula on day one, Eden, the Killer Whale Museum and Beowa National Park on day two, and Tathra, Bournda National Park and Bega on day three, with seasonal variations, a longer five-day version and travel tips.
Published
This itinerary is designed for a first visit to the Sapphire Coast, based in Merimbula for three nights. It balances beaches, wildlife, history and one good walk each day, without long drives. Distances on the Sapphire Coast are short, but roads wind around estuaries and headlands, so the plan leaves room to stop.
We do not sell tours or publish prices. Check opening hours, park alerts and tide times before each day.
Before you start
- Base: Merimbula, the most central town with the widest choice of accommodation.
- Transport: a car. Public transport between towns is limited.
- Park fees: some national park areas charge vehicle entry fees; check NPWS.
- Season: in spring, plan day two around whale watching in Eden.
Day 1: Merimbula and Pambula
Morning: Walk the Merimbula boardwalk around the lake, watching for stingrays and birds in the clear water. Continue to Short Point or Main Beach for a swim if conditions suit.
Lunch: Merimbula town centre or the wharf area.
Afternoon: Drive a few minutes south to Pambula. Visit an oyster farm for a tasting, explore Pambula Beach and the river mouth, or walk in the Panboola wetlands.
Evening: Sunset over Merimbula Lake.

Day 2: Eden, the Killer Whale Museum and Beowa National Park
Morning: Drive about 30 minutes south to Eden. Visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum to see Old Tom's skeleton and learn the story of the orcas that worked with the whalers of Twofold Bay. In whale season, take a morning cruise from Eden's wharf.
Lunch: Eden's wharf area or main street.
Afternoon: Head into Beowa National Park. North of Eden, visit the red rock formations and lookouts around Pambula and Haycock Point; south of Eden, drive to Boyds Tower and walk a section of the Light to Light Walk, or continue to Green Cape Lighthouse for sweeping views and whale watching in season.
Evening: Return to Merimbula, or stay in Eden if you want an early start on the walk.

Day 3: Tathra, Bournda National Park and Bega
Morning: Drive north to Bournda National Park for a walk around Bournda Lagoon or along the coast from Hobart Beach.
Late morning: Continue to Tathra. Walk out on the historic Tathra Wharf, where fishers and snorkellers gather, and swim at Tathra Beach if it is patrolled and conditions are calm.
Afternoon: Drive inland to Bega, the regional centre, for the cheese heritage centre and a look at the valley, then return to Merimbula.

Seasonal variations
| Season | Adjust the plan |
|---|---|
| Spring | Prioritise whale watching in Eden; headlands at Green Cape and Boyds Tower are excellent |
| Summer | Start early to beat the heat, and book accommodation well ahead |
| Autumn | Ideal walking weather; add a longer section of the Light to Light Walk |
| Winter | Shorter days; focus on museums, lookouts and the northern whale migration |
A five-day version
- Day 4: Drive north to Bermagui for the Blue Pool, the harbour and Mimosa Rocks National Park.
- Day 5: A hinterland day through Bega, Candelo and Cobargo, or a full day in Beowa National Park.
A week or more
With a week, add the full three-day Light to Light Walk, a night in Bermagui and an unhurried beach day. See our Light to Light Walk guide for bookings and preparation.
Travel tips
- Driving: watch for kangaroos and wallabies at dawn and dusk, especially on rural roads.
- Swimming: swim between the flags at patrolled beaches; many beaches are unpatrolled.
- Rock platforms: take care, as waves can surge unexpectedly. Read our rocky-shore etiquette note.
- Fire season: check NSW Rural Fire Service alerts and NPWS closures in summer.
Getting here
Merimbula is about three hours from Canberra and roughly six to six and a half hours from Sydney or Melbourne by road, and it has a regional airport. See getting there, and our Merimbula or Eden weekend note if you only have two days. The Sapphire Coast hub covers the whole region.
Frequently asked questions
Is three days enough for the Sapphire Coast?
Three days is enough for a good first visit covering Merimbula, Eden and one national park day. Five days or a week lets you add Bermagui, the hinterland or the Light to Light Walk.
Where should I stay on the Sapphire Coast?
Merimbula is the most central and practical base, with the widest choice of accommodation. Eden suits whale watchers and walkers heading to Beowa National Park. Tathra and Bermagui are quieter.
Do I need a car on the Sapphire Coast?
A car is strongly recommended. Public transport between towns is limited, and national parks and beaches are spread out.
What is the best season for this itinerary?
Spring is ideal for whales and mild weather. Autumn is settled and quiet. Summer is busy and warm, and winter is cool with whales offshore.
Can I do this itinerary from Canberra?
Yes. Merimbula is about three hours from Canberra by road, so a long weekend works well. Allow for winding roads through the ranges.
