Short biography of Prof Steve Kennelly BSc.(Hons), PhD, DSc.
Professor Steve Kennelly is the Director of Research for NSW Fisheries, responsible for all research and scientific advice to his Minister concerning fisheries, aquatic ecosystems and aquaculture. He is also Director of the Cronulla Fisheries Research Centre of Excellence (the Southern Hemisphere’s oldest fisheries lab) and Adjunct Professor ofMacquarieUniversity. He has a BSc (Honours), PhD and his highest degree (the prestigious Doctor of Science) is entitled “the Empirical Study of Marine Biological Resources”.
His largest personal research contributions to fisheries have been as a leader of teams working on the quantification, management and reduction of bycatch and discards in various trawl, seine, trap, handline and recreational fisheries. He is a regular speaker on bycatch issues at international conferences and meetings and recently published the book “Bycatch Reduction in the World’s Fisheries”. Most recently he worked for the United Nations FAO drafting “International Guidelines for Bycatch Management and Discard Reduction” and worked on various other bycatch projects, particularly inNigeria,Cameroon,Madagascar, the West Bank andGaza.
